Description

Eleventh cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2013 Jefferson Nickel, this Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling variety shows doubling on the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The tilted hub mechanism creates doubling that radiates from a pivot axis, and in this case the effect concentrates on the architectural detail of Jefferson's mansion — specifically the central entrance of Felix Schlag's reverse design. Die markers include a die scratch inside the lower E of UNITED and light die scratches above the D of UNITED, providing fixed diagnostics for attribution. The Monticello reverse, restored to the Jefferson Nickel in 2006 after the Westward Journey interlude, continues to offer variety hunters a geometrically rich design whose columns, steps, and door frames provide numerous reference points for measuring hub doubling. Philadelphia Mint, standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition. The concentration of doubling on architectural detail rather than lettering makes this variety distinctive among 2013 Jefferson Nickel doubled dies.
