Description

Eighth cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2013 Jefferson Nickel, this variety exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The tilted hub mechanism creates displacement radiating from a pivot axis, concentrating the visible doubling on the architectural detail of Jefferson's Virginia estate. Die markers include a die dot above the small right window and a die dot inside the large semicircular window above the center door on the reverse. No significant obverse markers noted. Philadelphia Mint, standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition. The center door of Monticello on Felix Schlag's reverse design serves as a focal point for multiple 2013 doubled die reverses, with the geometric precision of the door frame and surrounding architectural elements providing clear reference points against which even subtle hub displacement becomes detectable under magnification. The tilted hub class produces doubling that varies in intensity across the die face depending on distance from the pivot, making careful positional measurement essential for distinguishing WDDR-008 from related entries in the 2013 catalog.

Die Markers
