2012P-1DEO-014T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Presenting a rare dual-directional trail die configuration, this 2012 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent was discovered by Jacob Hines and cataloged as 2012P-1DEO-014T. The first set of trail lines emanates from the tops of the letters in LIBERTY at a 010-degree offset, while the second set extends from the bottoms of the date digits at 170 degrees, creating two groups of raised linear artifacts running in nearly opposite directions. A single trail line from the left arm of the Y in LIBERTY is noted as likely caused by a master die trail line rather than working die polishing, suggesting the artifact was inherited from an earlier stage in the die production chain. Die stage documentation places this at Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid die state showing no significant markers. The dual-directional nature distinguishes this from more common single-direction varieties, as it required two separate polishing passes at different angles to produce the opposing sets of raised lines.
