2012 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Moderate extra thickness on LIBERTY and the date characterizes this doubled die obverse on the 2012 Lincoln Shield Cent, with distinctive notching visible on the lower left of ERTY and the lower left of the numeral 1 in the date. The notching pattern is a telltale sign of hub doubling where the secondary impression slightly overlaps the primary design, creating a stepped or notched appearance at the edges of affected letters and digits. Attributed by the Wexler Team, it carries the cross-reference Wexler Variety ID: 2012 1¢ WDDO-009. No significant obverse die markers have been noted, but the reverse provides a strong diagnostic: a pronounced die dent extends from the rim above the right side of the second A in AMERICA. The Shield Cent design was introduced in 2010, replacing the four rotating reverses of the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial program with Lyndall Bass's permanent union shield motif. Die varieties on the Shield Cent continue to be cataloged as researchers examine modern production, and the ninth doubled die obverse for 2012 indicates active study of this relatively recent date.
