2012 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling produces visible doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello on this 2012 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, attributed by Evan Goldfarb. Tilted hub doubling — Class VIII in the Wexler classification system — occurs when the hub and die faces are not parallel during impression, causing one side of the design to receive more displacement than the other in a progressively increasing spread pattern. The center door of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, provides a contained architectural element where this tilted displacement is readily confirmed. Obverse die markers link this reverse to a specific obverse die: listed as 2012-P 5¢ WDDO-001, creating a DDO/DDR die marriage that combines two collectible varieties in a single coin.
