Description

Medium spread directed south producing an extra central doorway roof and lower window frame on Monticello identifies this third DDR for the 2012 Jefferson Nickel Return to Monticello design. The southward displacement created a phantom roofline above the central entrance and doubled the lower window frame detail, producing architectural anomalies on Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate that serve as prominent diagnostic features. Die stage documentation under UVC-1813 and DMR-004 tracks three states: Stage A with reverse and obverse in Early Die State, Stage B in MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS (unconfirmed). Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 2012 Jefferson Nickel continued the Return to Monticello reverse that was reintroduced in 2006 after the two-year Westward Journey program. The architectural detail of Monticello — with its central dome, portico columns, windows, and doorways — provides an exceptionally rich canvas for doubled die effects, as even modest hub displacement produces visible duplication of the building's fine structural elements. The extra doorway roof and doubled window frame that characterize DDR-003 are among the more visually compelling doubled die manifestations possible on the Monticello reverse, rewarding collectors who systematically examine nickel reverses for architectural anomalies.
