2012 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as the second doubled die reverse for the 2012 Jefferson Nickel from the Return to Monticello series (2006 to date), DDR-002 exhibits a medium spread South manifesting as an extra central doorway roof and lower window frame on Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design. Die markers are tracked under UVC-1812 and DMR-003, with three documented die stages: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), Stage B transitions to Mid-Die State (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C reaches Late Die State (LDS, also unconfirmed). The southward spread direction indicates the hub shifted downward relative to the die between hubbing impressions, causing design elements to be impressed slightly below their intended positions on the second pass. Monticello's architectural features — the columned portico, pediment, windows, and doorway — provide unusually sharp reference geometry for detecting and measuring hub doubling, since straight architectural lines reveal misalignment more readily than organic design elements. The 2012 nickel continued the Felix Schlag reverse that had been restored in 2006 after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey commemorative reverses, maintaining the familiar three-quarter view of Jefferson's Virginia estate that has graced the denomination since 1938.
