Description

Third rim cud variety documented for the 2012 Philadelphia Roosevelt Dime, CU-10C-2012P-03R represents a separate die break from the CU-10C-2012P-01R variety, occurring at a different position along the rim. Each cud is the product of a unique fracture event in a specific die, making every cataloged cud variety distinct in its shape, size, and angular position on the coin. The mechanics of cud formation begin with microscopic stress fractures that develop at the die rim under repeated high-tonnage striking pressure. Once a fragment detaches, the void in the die face allows planchet metal to flow upward into the gap, creating the characteristic raised blob that identifies a cud error. Attributed by Cuds on Coins under catalog number CU-10C-2012P-03R, this variety joins at least three documented rim cuds for the 2012 Philadelphia dime — an unusually high count for a single date and mint combination on the Roosevelt Dime series. John R. Sinnock's design has been in production since 1946, and multiple cuds from one year's production suggest that die quality or operational pressures may have been factors in the 2012 Philadelphia run.
