2011P-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Steven Bingham, the 2011P-1DER-003T is a trail die reverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent. Trail die reverse varieties retain faint vestiges of a prior hub impression on the working die, producing subtle secondary design traces on struck coins. At Stage B, the obverse is at mid-die-state with a forked die crack in Lincoln's brow and forehead, where the crack splits into two branches creating a distinctive Y-shaped pattern. The reverse is also at MDS, displaying a die scratch through the top of the S in PLURIBUS. The forked die crack on the obverse is particularly diagnostic because its branching geometry makes it unmistakable once located, distinguishing it from simple linear cracks. The reverse die scratch through the S of PLURIBUS provides an independent confirmation marker, positioned in the motto area where collectors can quickly verify the variety under moderate magnification.
