2011 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-2011-01

Description

ADC-1c-2011-01 is a two-sided die clash on a 2011-P Lincoln Shield Cent, cataloged by MadDieClashes and bearing a noted similarity to ADC-1c-2010-01 from the inaugural year of the Shield Cent design. On the obverse, parts of the striped shielding from the reverse design are transferred into the fields surrounding Lincoln's portrait; the shield's edge appears both in front of and behind the portrait. Additionally, the letters UNU of UNUM are faintly impressed in front of and behind Lincoln's tie. On the reverse, within the shield design itself, the bottom of Lincoln's nose and a portion of his hair are visible — transferred from the obverse die. The bidirectional nature of the clash, with reverse imagery on the obverse and obverse imagery on the reverse, represents a fully realized clash event before die abrasion was performed. The Lincoln Shield Cent reverse design, introduced in 2010, features thirteen vertical stripes and a shield topped with a horizontal bar bearing a union shield — the juxtaposition of Lincoln's portrait against shield imagery makes clash transfers particularly legible.
