Description

Discovered by Jean Lee and attributed through the Trail Dies catalog, this 2011-D Roosevelt Dime regular strike exhibits a trail die reverse — a specialized error where ghostly trails extend from design elements due to slight lateral movement during striking or die installation anomalies. Trails emanate from the tops of the E PLURIBUS UNUM letters, the tips of the torch flames, and lightly from the olive leaves, offset at approximately 005 degrees. This trail die was found in official Mint Sets, consistent with the source of many trail die discoveries — coins packaged by the Mint without entering circulation, where subtle trails might be obscured by handling marks. Stage A has been documented in early die state with no additional die markers identified beyond the trail features themselves. The Roosevelt Dime has been struck continuously since 1946, and trail die varieties represent a distinct category from doubled dies: where doubled dies result from hub-to-die preparation errors, trail dies arise from anomalies during the actual striking operation, producing directional streaking rather than the discrete secondary impressions typical of hub doubling.
