2010P-1DEO-009T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Discovered by Jason Dick on the Lincoln Shield Cent introduced in 2010, trail die 2010P-1DEO-009T documents a planchet feed timing anomaly where the obverse die struck a planchet before it was fully seated in the collar, leaving a partial off-center impression from the previous strike overlapping with the primary design. Trail dies occupy a unique niche in the error taxonomy because they originate from the mechanical coin-feeding process rather than from die manufacture—the die itself is perfectly normal, but the striking sequence produces a ghost image from the trailing planchet's partial contact with the die. The Shield Cent reverse, designed by Lyndall Bass, features a Union shield with a scroll bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the obverse retains Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait paired with this new reverse.
