Description

Found by Jean Lee on the 2010 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, this trail die obverse exhibits offset trail impressions from a slightly shifted obverse die. In Stage B, the obverse is MDS with a die crack visible in Lincoln's hair and a die gouge in the field above the L of LIBERTY. The reverse is MDS with a die dot seen in the right end of the scroll. Trail die varieties arise when a working die shifts fractionally between successive strikes, leaving faint secondary impressions alongside the primary design. The 2010 Lincoln Shield Cent introduced Lyndall Bass's union shield reverse, replacing the Lincoln Memorial design that had been used since 1959. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets, these cents continued the modern composition adopted in 1982. Trail die errors on the Shield Cent series offer variety collectors an affordable entry point into die-state study on a widely circulated denomination.
