Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2009 1-cent FY WDDO-006, this Lincoln Bicentennial Cent bearing the Formative Years reverse displays extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, the lower hair, and the beard details, with slight additional thickening on the date. Notches appear on the bottom right side of the letters in LIBERTY, a specific doubling artifact where the secondary impression creates small step-like indentations at the letter bases. Obverse die markers include die scratches running south below the nose and north above the nose, plus a die crack running northwest from the eyebrow into the forehead. The reverse of this variety is itself a doubled die, listed as 2009 1-cent FY WDDR-055, establishing this as a combination DDO/DDR variety with hub doubling on both sides. The Formative Years obverse shares the standard Lincoln portrait by Victor David Brenner with all 2009 cent designs, while the reverse designed by Charles Vickers depicts young Lincoln reading on a log. The combination variety status — with WDDO-006 on the obverse and WDDR-055 on the reverse — means coins from this die pair carry doubled features on both sides, a conjunction that substantially increases collector interest and market value. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cents were struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19 mm diameter. The notching on LIBERTY's letter bases is a distinctive diagnostic best observed under 10x magnification, while the die crack from eyebrow to forehead provides an unmistakable die identification marker.
