2009 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-2009(EC)-01

Courtesy of Michael Forader, ADC-1C-2009(EC)-01 documents an atypical die clash on the 2009 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Cent Early Childhood issue, the first of four Bicentennial reverse designs depicting a log cabin representing Lincoln's Kentucky birthplace. The clash transferred BUS and NU from E PLURIBUS UNUM along with portions of the log cabin onto the obverse, while the portrait and jacket folds appear as transferred impressions on the reverse. Atypical die clashes differ from standard clashes in that the transferred elements appear in unexpected positions or with unusual characteristics not matching a simple aligned die contact. This clash is stronger than ADC-1C-2009(EC)-002, the second cataloged atypical clash for this issue, with more pronounced transferred design elements visible on the affected surfaces. The Early Childhood log cabin reverse, designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz, depicts a one-room cabin symbolizing Lincoln's humble origins. The greater strength relative to the 002 listing makes this the more visually dramatic of the two atypical clash varieties cataloged for this Bicentennial issue.
