Description

Featuring the Duke Ellington design that made the District of Columbia Quarter one of the most distinctive issues in the state quarter program, DDR-010 displays light eastward spread on the upper elbow sleeve of the jazz legend seated at his piano. Cataloged as UVC-1773 with a die marriage rating of DMR-012, this variety progresses through four documented die states. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B introduces a depression under the B of COLUMBIA at early-mid state alongside a die crack on the front of the bust and another on the forehead. Stage C adds a depression outside the middle piano edge at mid die state, a second depression under the piano bench above the T of JUSTICE, and a die crack on the nose. Stage D at late die state remains unconfirmed. The progression of depressions — shallow concavities in the die surface caused by metal fatigue — provides an unusual set of markers for sequencing specimens within this die marriage. The 2009 D.C. quarter was part of the final year of the broader 50 States program extension. Attributed by VarietyVista.
