Description

Sharing the same catalog number as Entry 5 but distinguished by Position B edge lettering orientation, this second PC-100c-2009P-01 Pre-Cud occurs on a 2009 Philadelphia Satin Finish Presidential Dollar honoring William Henry Harrison. The Position B designation indicates the edge lettering reads in the opposite orientation relative to the obverse compared to Position A specimens — a distinction unique to the Presidential Dollar series where the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM were incused on the edge rather than the face. Pre-cuds on Presidential Dollars are particularly interesting because the three-strike production process (obverse/reverse, then edge lettering) subjected dies to different stress patterns than conventional two-die striking. The Harrison dollar commemorates the president who delivered the longest inaugural address in history (nearly two hours in cold rain) and served the shortest term (31 days), dying of pneumonia in April 1841. Cross-referenced as Presidential Dollar "W. H. Harrison" and cataloged March 11, 2024, this variety documents the rim depression that precedes full cud development on a dollar die. The existence of the same pre-cud designation across both Position A and Position B specimens raises the question of whether both originated from the same die or whether identical pre-cud patterns developed independently on separate dies — a forensic question that requires physical comparison of the break geometry to resolve.
