Description

First documented obverse trail die for the 2008 Philadelphia Mint Martin Van Buren Presidential Dollar in Position A edge lettering, this variety is cataloged by Trail Dies under 100DEO-001T. In Stage A early die state, the obverse carries a small die dot on Monroe's forehead — a detail reflecting the manufacturing origin of this die, where the hubbing process transferred a feature from the Monroe die production sequence. The reverse is in early die state with no specific markers noted. Martin Van Buren, the eighth President, was the fourth and final Presidential Dollar honoree of 2008, following Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson. The manganese brass clad composition produced a distinctive golden color that distinguished Presidential Dollars from other circulating coinage.
