Description

First documented obverse cud for the 2008 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime, the "A" suffix in CU-10c-2008P-01A designates this as an obverse die failure — distinguishing it from the more commonly documented reverse cuds. Obverse cuds on Roosevelt Dimes affect the portrait side of the coin, where a rim fragment breaking away can obliterate portions of the IN GOD WE TRUST motto, the date, the LIBERTY inscription, or Roosevelt's profile depending on the fracture location. The cud forms when the separated die fragment leaves a cavity that fills with metal during striking, producing the characteristic raised featureless mass. The 2008 date marks one of the later years of robust Roosevelt Dime production at Philadelphia before shifting mintage patterns of subsequent years.
