2008D(AK)-25DER-002T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Found by Louis Fan on the 2008 Denver Mint Alaska State Quarter, this trail die reverse variety shows misaligned die trail lines on the reverse from a slightly shifted die during striking. In Stage B (LMDS), the obverse displays light die cracks entering the field from Washington's eyebrow and the tip of his nose. The reverse, also in LMDS, exhibits a die chip in the bear's left claw. Trail die varieties occur when the die shifts slightly between strikes or during setup, leaving faint ghost-like impressions offset from the primary design. The Alaska State Quarter, released in 2008 as the 49th issue in the 50 State Quarters program, features a grizzly bear with a salmon in its mouth against a backdrop of the state's wilderness. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition at the Denver Mint, this variety adds die-state interest to a series that introduced millions of Americans to coin collecting.
