Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-1746 and DMR-033, this State Quarter doubled die reverse from the 2007 issue exhibits a very strong spread creating a duplicate saddle horn tip visible beneath the primary saddle horn on the Wyoming reverse design. The die progressed through three stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 2007 Wyoming State Quarter, designed by Norman E. Nemeth, features a bucking horse and rider with the inscription "The Equality State" — and the saddle horn at the top of the western saddle proved to be a particularly productive area for detecting doubled die spread because its isolated, protruding geometry creates an unmistakable doubled image when hub misalignment occurs. A "very strong" designation from VarietyVista indicates this is among the more dramatic doubled die examples in the State Quarter series, where the duplicate saddle horn tip is potentially visible to the unaided eye. The State Quarters program (1999-2008) generated enormous collector interest and prompted unprecedented scrutiny of circulating coinage, with variety hunters examining millions of coins from each state's issue. Thirty documented doubled die reverses for a single State Quarter design reflects this intense examination, and the saddle horn doubling on DDR-030 stands as one of the more visually appealing specimens in the catalog.
