2007 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Identified by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2007-P 25c WA WDDO-003, this doubled die obverse on the 2007 Philadelphia Mint Washington State Quarter — honoring the state of Washington, not to be confused with the general Washington Quarter series — shows doubling on the underside of Washington's earlobe. The obverse carries extensive die markers: a die crack across the base of the bust, a small die gouge left of the bottom of the E in STATES, a die gouge between the R and I in AMERICA, two die gouges right of the C in AMERICA, and a small die gouge far above the GO in GOD. On the reverse, die pitting appears through the 89 in 1889 (the year of Washington's statehood), three strong east-west die scratches run through the STA in STATE, a die gouge sits between the H and I in WASHINGTON, and another die gouge appears between the 1 and 8 in 1889. The abundance of die markers on both sides makes this variety highly attributable despite the subtle earlobe doubling. The Washington State Quarter features a leaping salmon against a backdrop of Mount Rainier, and the 1889 statehood date on the reverse provides multiple reference points where die condition can be assessed.
