2007 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Discovered on the satin finish version of the 2007-P Utah State Quarter, this WDDO-003 is one of the less common doubled dies found on the special mint set finish coins produced from 2005 through 2010. Satin finish coins were manufactured using a distinctive burnishing process applied to blanks before striking, creating a matte-like surface that differs from both standard business strikes and proof issues. On the obverse, a light die crack runs across the base of the bust and through the upper designer's initials. On the reverse, a die scratch runs southwest from the bottom left side of the second S in CROSSROADS — a reference to Utah's state motto, which appeared on the reverse alongside the golden spike and railroad imagery commemorating the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2007-P 25' UT SF WDDO-003, the SF designation confirms the satin finish strike type. Doubled dies on satin finish State Quarters are relatively scarce in the variety catalog compared to their business strike counterparts, making this Utah issue a noteworthy find for specialists who collect across all strike types.
