2007P-1DEO-014T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Found by David Miller, the 2007P-1DEO-014T is a trail die obverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. Trail die obverse varieties occur when a working die retains partial impressions from an earlier hubbing, and the residual design traces transfer onto the obverse of struck coins as faint secondary images. Documented at Stage B with both sides at mid-die-state, the obverse shows no specific markers noted at this stage. The reverse carries three small die dots in the stylobate beneath column 11, where the raised platform that supports the Memorial columns provides a smooth field against which these small raised dots are readily visible. A die gouge to the left of the T in CENT adds a denomination-area diagnostic on the reverse. The stylobate dots beneath column 11 offer a precise architectural landmark for locating the reverse markers, as the stylobate's flat surface makes any die imperfections conspicuous. The 2007 Philadelphia Mint cent belongs to the penultimate year of the Memorial reverse design, which concluded in 2008 after nearly fifty years of continuous production.
