2007P-1DEO-010T Trail Die Obverse
Error
Description
When a deteriorating die bearing cracks that have progressed into raised metal trails remains in service, the resulting coins carry the characteristic markings classified as trail die varieties. The 2007P-1DEO-010T is a trail die obverse variety on the 2007 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, attributed by Coppercoins and discovered by Louis Schaeffer. Die stage documentation covers Stage B, at which point the obverse is mid-die state, showing two die cracks in the hair of Lincoln's head. The reverse in Stage B is also mid-die state, exhibiting a die crack in column 1 that crosses over the top of bay one and develops into a die chip in column 2, with an additional die chip in the top of column 3. The progression from cracks to chips to raised trails is the defining arc of a trail die's working life. The "T" suffix in the variety designation reflects the trail die classification in the Coppercoins system. Philadelphia cents of 2007 are copper-plated zinc. Collectors attributing this variety should confirm the obverse hair cracks and the multi-feature reverse cracking pattern through columns one and two as the definitive Stage B markers for 2007P-1DEO-010T.
