2007P-1DEO-009T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Found by Louis Schaeffer, this trail die obverse variety appears on the 2007 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. A trail die is produced when a previously struck coin inadvertently re-enters the coining press and is struck again by a different die pair, resulting in a faint secondary image beneath the dominant design. The obverse carries the trail image here. Documented in Stage C with both sides in late die state, the obverse displays a die crack with an associated die chip in Lincoln's hair as the principal marker. The reverse LDS shows die cracks on the tops of columns 1, 2, and 4 of the Memorial building. The cracking on three of the first four columns suggests progressive die failure concentrated in the upper portion of the reverse die. Schaeffer, who also discovered the 2000P-1DEO-002T, was a prolific contributor to trail die documentation on Lincoln cents. The 2007 Philadelphia cent was among the last Memorial reverse issues, as the design transitioned to four commemorative reverses in 2009 before the Shield reverse debuted in 2010.
