2007P-1DEO-006T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Discovered by Bob Piazza of Florida, the 2007P-1DEO-006T is an unusual ramped trail die obverse on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Unlike typical trail dies that produce subtle design traces, this specimen exhibits dramatic directional smearing: the word LIBERTY is visibly smeared in the westward direction, a hallmark of a ramped trail die where the die shifts along an inclined path during the striking process. Two additional faint trails are noted, one on the D of GOD and the other on the W of WE, while the date also shows effects of design extension. The offset direction is approximately 270 degrees. This die pair is recorded at Stage B in an Early Mid Die State (EMDS). Ramped trail dies are considerably scarcer than standard trail die varieties because they require a specific mechanical failure mode in the press. The directional consistency of the smearing across LIBERTY, GOD, and WE confirms the westward ram direction and makes this one of the more visually striking trail die specimens in the Lincoln cent series.
