Description

A trail die obverse on the 2007-P Lincoln Memorial Cent, catalogued by Trail Dies as 2007P-1DEO-003T. The coin was struck in copper-plated zinc at the Philadelphia Mint. Trail dies are working dies used beyond normal service life, producing characteristic advanced deterioration across multiple stages. Stage A is an Early Die State on both sides: the obverse carries no noted markers, while the reverse shows a die crack running from the left urn into the third column — the urn being the decorative finial at the top of the Memorial columns, a small but specific architectural element. Stage B advances the obverse to Middle Die State with no observed markers, while the reverse Middle Die State shows a die chip on the lower portion of a design element. The die crack from the urn into the column at Stage A is a precisely located reverse marker specific to this trail die.
