2007P-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Discovered by Robert Tingle, the 2007P-1DEO-001T is a trail die obverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. Trail die obverse varieties preserve remnants of a prior hub impression on the working die, producing faint secondary design traces on the obverse of struck coins. Documented at Stage A in early die state, the obverse shows the beginning of a die crack in Lincoln's hair, catching the die at the very start of its deterioration. The reverse is also at EDS, carrying a small die scratch next to the rim between the N and I of UNITED. The early die state documentation is noteworthy because it captures the trail die features before progressive wear could alter or obscure the secondary hub impression remnants. The hair crack on the obverse, still in its nascent stage, and the rim-adjacent scratch between N and I on the reverse together provide paired diagnostics on this 2007 cent from the next-to-last year of the Memorial reverse design.
