Description

Second doubled die obverse documented for the 2007 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-002 has been illustrated with an overlay image courtesy of Billy G. Crawford that shows both the doubling and the specific part of the ear from which it originated. Overlay photography is a valuable attribution tool that superimposes multiple images to highlight the exact displacement between the primary and secondary hub impressions, making the doubling mechanism visible in a way that single photographs cannot achieve. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2007 1c WDDO-002, this variety documents hub doubling on one of the penultimate dates of the Memorial reverse — Frank Gasparro's design would be replaced after 2008 by the four 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial reverses and then the 2010 Union Shield reverse. Victor David Brenner's obverse, in continuous production since 1909, has hosted thousands of documented doubled die obverse varieties across nearly a century of Lincoln Cent coinage, and the 2007 date contributed its share to that extensive catalog.
