Description

Cataloged in the Cuds on Coins registry as CU-100c-2007P-02R, this cud error appears on the 2007 (P) Presidential Dollar honoring James Madison, struck in Position A. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and breaks away entirely, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking — producing a raised, featureless blob along the coin's edge where design detail would normally appear. Unlike a simple die crack, which leaves the die surface intact, a cud involves actual loss of die material, creating an unmistakable disruption visible without magnification. Position A refers to the orientation of the coin's edge lettering: when the obverse (portrait side) faces up, the incused edge inscription reads normally from left to right. The Presidential Dollar series, launched in 2007 with George Washington through the present, introduced edge-incused dates and mottos — a feature that created the Position A and Position B distinction based on which side the lettering aligns with. James Madison, the fourth president, appeared on one of the inaugural-year releases, making this cud variety a die failure from the very first year of Presidential Dollar production at Philadelphia.
