Description

Holding the premier DDO catalog position for the 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent, DDO-001 is documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-2500 and DMR-002. The doubling presents as medium spread on LIBERTY, showing as notches on the upper left serifs and extra thickness on Lincoln's beard — a combination of inscription-based and portrait-based diagnostics that provides two independent confirmation zones for attribution. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A with both obverse and reverse at early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The notching on LIBERTY's upper left serifs is a highly specific diagnostic: it means the secondary hub impression displaced each letter's upper-left serif detail, creating small step-like indentations where the primary and secondary serif images overlap incompletely. This type of serif notching is among the most widely taught DDO identification techniques because it can often be detected with a standard 5x loupe. The extra thickness on Lincoln's beard provides a secondary confirmation point — the fine parallel lines of the beard engraving are sensitive to hub displacement, and even medium-intensity doubling can produce perceptible thickening of individual hair strands. Stage A documentation at EDS for both dies suggests this variety was identified on specimens struck relatively early in the die's service life, before significant wear accumulated. The 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent represents one of the final years of this iconic reverse design, which would be replaced after 2008, making DDO-001 part of the closing chapter of Memorial Cent die variety production.
