Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team for the 2006 North Dakota State Quarter, WDDO-001 documents hub doubling on the underside of Washington's earlobe — a subtle but confirmable location that rewards close examination at 7x–10x with oblique lighting directed upward against the earlobe's lower curve. Die markers on both faces provide attribution anchors independent of the earlobe doubling. The obverse carries a small gouge to the right of the center M of AMERICA and two gouges to the right of the lower S of STATES, a three-marker cluster in the obverse motto that is accessible at 5x magnification. The reverse carries its own die marker set to complete the two-face attribution. North Dakota State Quarters were produced at Philadelphia in the clad composition as part of the 50 State Quarters program's final two years. WDDO-001's status as the premier doubled die obverse for this date makes it the benchmark attribution for the 2006-P North Dakota quarter variety population. The earlobe doubling location is consistent with Class I or Mechanical hub doubling affecting the lower portrait profile, and collectors should examine the full earlobe underside rather than a single point for the most reliable confirmation. Die Markers: Obverse: A small die gouge can be found to the right of the center of the M in AMERICA. Two die gouges can be found to the right of the upper R in DOLLAR. A die crack runs across the base of the bust and through the upper designer’s initials. Reverse: A strong die gouge can be found between the first two rays of the sun moving CW. A small die gouge can be found to the left of the top of the 1 in 1889.
