Description

The 2006 WDDO-027 Lincoln Memorial cent displays strong extra thickness on LIBERTY with notches on the lower right of the letters ERTY, a visually prominent doubled die obverse variety. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets, this cent weighs 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter. The notching effect on LIBERTY, where the lower right portions of the letters show a stepped or shelf-like appearance, is the primary pickup point and can often be detected with a good quality 5x loupe. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge below the six in the date and another small die gouge near the rim southeast of the six. The reverse carries a small die gouge to the right of the lower I in UNITED. This variety is cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-008, reflecting Billy G. Crawford's independent attribution, and Wexler Variety ID 2006 1c WDDO-027. The dual cross-referencing between the Crawford and Wexler systems provides collectors with confidence in the attribution. Cataloged by the Wexler Team, this variety belongs to the Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959-2008 series. The strong extra thickness and notching on LIBERTY is the type of variety that can potentially be spotted during roll searching or examining dealer stock, making it an accessible target for cherry-pickers. The 2006 Philadelphia Mint produced approximately 4.2 billion cents, but each doubled die represents only those coins struck from one specific die, typically numbering in the hundreds of thousands at most before the die was retired or replaced.
