2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-026
ErrorDescription
Presenting strong extra thickness on LIBERTY with distinctive notches on the lower left of the ERTY letters, the 2006 WDDO-026 Lincoln Memorial cent features one of the more visually prominent obverse doubled dies for this late-series date. Notching — where the secondary image creates small step-like intrusions along the letter edges — is a hallmark of hub doubling that collectors use to differentiate true doubled dies from the worthless machine doubling that mimics similar effects. The strong classification indicates substantial hub displacement. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the right of the six in the date and a small die gouge just above the I in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits below the right side of the A in STATES. These three gouges, distributed across both sides of the coin, allow precise attribution to this specific working die. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2006 1¢ WDDO-026, no other cross-references are currently known. The 2006 cent was among the final years of the Memorial reverse design, which concluded after 2008.
