2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-025

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2006 1-cent WDDO-025 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-014, this doubled die obverse variety appears on a 2006 Lincoln Memorial cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The 2006 cent is composed of copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter, part of the final years of the Lincoln Memorial reverse design that would be replaced after 2008. The primary doubling diagnostic on WDDO-025 manifests as extra thickness on the date, where the hub misalignment during die preparation left a secondary impression visible alongside the primary date numerals. The date area is the recommended location for initial variety screening on this die. Obverse die markers include a die gouge southeast of the second T in TRUST and a die gouge to the right of the six in the date, both of which provide confirmation points once a candidate coin is identified. The reverse carries three distinct die gouges: one to the right of the bottom of the T in UNITED, one to the left of the F in the designer's initials (FG for Frank Gasparro), and one to the right of the T in CENT. The Crawford cross-reference as CDDO-014 indicates this variety is independently documented in the Crawford catalog system, providing additional verification of its status as a distinct die variety. Philadelphia produced over 4.2 billion cents in 2006, the third-to-last year of the Memorial reverse, and the enormous die consumption required for such production volumes meant that even a small percentage of dies with hub alignment issues could generate a substantial absolute number of doubled die varieties for researchers to discover and catalog.
