2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2006 1¢ WDDO-024 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-005, this Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits strong extra thickness on LIBERTY with notches visible on the upper left of the ERTY letters — a distinctive manifestation where the hub displacement created not just a thickened appearance but actual notch-like indentations at specific points along the letter profiles, indicating the secondary impression was offset enough to produce visible separation at the letter edges. Extra thickness also shows on the lower hair and beard details of Lincoln's portrait and on the date numerals, affecting multiple design zones across the obverse. Obverse die markers include a die gouge to the right of the bottom of the bust and a die crack running north-northeast from the eyebrow through the forehead, while reverse markers show a small die gouge above the O in OF and a die crack running down the left side of the E in CENT and continuing out to the rim. The die crack through Lincoln's forehead is a progressive structural failure marker that, combined with the rim-reaching crack on the reverse, suggests both dies were experiencing concurrent deterioration during production of documented specimens. The Lincoln Memorial Cent in 2006 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse were in their final years of combined service — the Memorial design would be replaced after 2008 by the four 2009 Bicentennial reverses. The Crawford CDDO-005 cross-reference confirms independent documentation of this variety in Billy G. Crawford's doubled die catalog, providing dual-source attribution confidence.
