2006 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team, the 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-016 displays light extra thickness on the date and LIBERTY, with distinctive notches visible on the upper left portions of the letters E, R, T, and Y in LIBERTY. The notching pattern — where the upper-left corners of these letters show step-like offsets — indicates the hub doubling displaced design elements in a specific directional vector that affected the upper-left geometry of letter serifs most prominently. Two die markers aid in attribution: on the obverse, a small die gouge appears north of the letters IB in LIBERTY, and on the reverse, a die gouge can be found inside the upper M of AMERICA. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. The 2006 Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc composition during the final years of Frank Gasparro's Memorial Cent reverse design, which would be replaced by four Bicentennial reverses in 2009 followed by the Union Shield in 2010. The "extra thickness" presentation with notched corners represents a subtle form of hub doubling that requires attention to letter geometry rather than looking for separated secondary images, and the specific ERTY focus area gives collectors a targeted zone for initial examination under magnification.
