CU-25c-2005P-18R(WV) Cud
Error
Description
Cataloged as CU-25c-2005P-18R(WV), this cud error appears on the 2005 Philadelphia-struck West Virginia State Quarter, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. Cuds are a type of major die break at the rim where a piece of the die fractures and falls away entirely, leaving a raised featureless blob of unstruck metal at the edge of the coin. The copper-nickel clad quarter weighs 5.67 grams and measures 24.26 mm in diameter with a reeded edge. The Cuds on Coins reference project documented this variety as of May 2, 2024, and noted that the obverse carries a die crack visible in reference photographs (indicated by a black arrow), suggesting the obverse die was also developing structural problems alongside the reverse cud formation. West Virginia's State Quarter reverse, designed by John Mercanti, depicts the New River Gorge and Bridge with the inscription "Mountain State," celebrating the natural beauty and engineering achievement of one of the world's longest steel arch bridges. The 18R designation in the catalog number indicates this is the 18th reverse cud variety documented for the 2005-P West Virginia quarter, a substantial number that reflects both the high production volumes of the State Quarters program and the dedication of error collectors who systematically catalog these die failures. Cuds on State Quarters are particularly popular with collectors because each state's unique reverse design means the cud's position affects different design elements, creating distinct visual characteristics for each documented variety.
