Description

Fifteenth documented cud variety for the 2005 Philadelphia Mint West Virginia State Quarter, this rim die break produced a raised featureless mass where a section of the die rim fractured and separated, leaving a cavity that filled with metal during striking. Fifteen cuds from a single state's quarter issue is a high count that reflects both the enormous mintage — Philadelphia struck hundreds of millions of West Virginia quarters in 2005 — and the intensive search effort these coins received from the error coin community. The West Virginia quarter, designed by John Mercanti, depicts the New River Gorge Bridge and was released as part of the 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008), one of the most popular circulating commemorative programs in U.S. Mint history.
