Description

Found on a Satin Mint Set (SMS) specimen from the 2005 Westward Journey nickel series, the DDO-004 exhibits light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST on the special obverse portrait designed for the 2005 nickels. The 2005 Westward Journey program featured two different reverses — the American Bison and Ocean in View designs — and this DDO-004 appears on the Bison reverse pairing. The SMS designation indicates a satin finish coin produced for annual uncirculated mint sets from 2005 to 2010, distinguishable from both regular circulation strikes and mirror-finish proofs by its distinctive matte-like surface. Die markers UVC-1627 and DMR-006 identify this working die across three stages: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B tentatively in mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C tentatively in late die state (unconfirmed). Cataloged by VarietyVista, this Philadelphia Mint SMS striking was produced in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams. Collectors should note that SMS specimens can be found in unopened Mint Sets — the original U.S. Mint packaging provides provenance confirmation for the satin finish. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST on the obverse for the light spread that defines this Westward Journey variety.
