Description

The 2004-P WDDR-021 Wisconsin Statehood quarter presents a dual-interest variety: the obverse is itself a doubled die listed as 2004-P 25c WI WDDO-002, making this another prized DDO/DDR combination die pair. The obverse doubling shows on the underside of Washington's earlobe, while a die crack runs across the left side of the base of the bust extending into the field above the U in QUARTER. The reverse die marker is a short, vertical die gouge inside the upper first S in WISCONSIN. The coin is struck in copper-nickel clad composition (91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel outer layers over a pure copper core), weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter. Cataloged by the Wexler Team with the designation Wexler Variety ID 2004-P 25c WI WDDR-021 and no other known cross-references, this variety is part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The 2004-P Wisconsin quarter is already famous in variety collecting circles due to the "extra leaf" varieties (High Leaf and Low Leaf) that generated widespread public interest, but dedicated variety collectors know that many other less-publicized doubled die varieties also exist on this date and mintmark. The State Quarters program, which ran from 1999 to 2008 and produced unique reverse designs for each of the 50 states, generated unprecedented public interest in coin collecting and variety hunting.
