Description

Documented by the Wexler Team with Variety ID 2004-P 25c WI WDDR-004, this doubled die reverse appears on the 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The primary diagnostic is a doubled left nostril on the cow depicted in Alfred Maletsky's reverse design, which features a head of cheese, a cow, and an ear of corn representing Wisconsin's dairy and agricultural heritage. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge dot on the right inside of the O in DOLLAR and a light die crack running across the base of the bust through the upper designer's initials. The reverse carries a short vertical die scratch inside the upper second N of WISCONSIN and a small die gouge to the left of the lower P in PLURIBUS. The 2004-P Wisconsin quarter was struck in the standard copper-nickel clad composition, weighing 5.67 grams at 24.3 mm diameter. No other cross-references are currently known. The 2004 Wisconsin quarter is one of the most famous State Quarters for variety collectors due to the well-publicized Extra Leaf High and Extra Leaf Low varieties (separate from this WDDR-004), which generated nationwide media attention and caused many people to start examining their change for varieties. This WDDR-004 variety, while less dramatic than the extra leaf varieties, represents a legitimate hub doubling error that is part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series, one of the most popular collecting programs in modern numismatic history.
