Description

Wisconsin's state quarter, featuring a cow, wheel of cheese, and ear of corn designed by Alfred Maletsky, became one of the most avidly collected State Quarter issues after the discovery of the famous "Extra Leaf" varieties — and WDDR-007 adds to the 2004-P Wisconsin quarter's already extensive variety catalog. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID 2004-P 25-cent WI WDDR-007 with no other known attributions, this doubled die reverse was cataloged by the Wexler Team. The WDDR-007 designation places this as the seventh documented doubled die reverse for the 2004-P Wisconsin quarter specifically, separate from the celebrated Extra High Leaf and Extra Low Leaf varieties that generated widespread media attention and collector interest in 2005. Philadelphia struck 226,400,000 Wisconsin State Quarters in 2004, and the intense scrutiny this issue received after the Extra Leaf discovery led to the identification of numerous additional varieties that might otherwise have gone unnoticed on a less popular state quarter design. The State Quarters program (1999-2008) produced fifty unique reverse designs over ten years, and the Wisconsin issue's complex agricultural scene — with its multiple curved and organic design elements — provides numerous surfaces where hub doubling can manifest and be detected by careful examination under magnification.
