2004 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015

Description

Attributed to the 2004 Philadelphia Mint Wisconsin State Quarter, this Wexler-cataloged doubled die reverse shows the cow with a doubled left nostril — a subtle but diagnostically significant marker on one of the State Quarter program's most popular designs. The Wexler Team assigned this variety the designation 2004-P 25c WI WDDR-015, with no other known cross-references. Obverse die markers include two small die gouges to the right of the upper first T in STATES, three small die gouges to the right of, in the center of, and at the bottom of the A in QUARTER, and a die gouge touching the upper left of the A in QUARTER. No significant reverse markers were noted beyond the doubling itself. The 2004 Wisconsin quarter, designed by Alfred Maletsky, features a cow, a wheel of cheese, and an ear of corn representing the state's agricultural heritage. Wisconsin quarters are already among the most sought-after State Quarter issues due to the famous "Extra Leaf" varieties, and additional doubled die varieties on this design attract considerable collector interest. Hub doubling affecting an anatomical detail like the cow's nostril creates a variety that is both attributable under magnification and connected to one of the most collected modern quarter designs.
