Description

Like WDDR-006, this 2004-P Wisconsin State Quarter doubled die reverse (Wexler Variety ID 2004-P 25c WI WDDR-009) features a doubled left nostril on the cow. However, the two varieties originate from distinct working dies, differentiated by an entirely separate marker suite. The obverse of WDDR-009 carries a die crack along the bottom of the bust; a large die gouge at the throat northeast of the Y in LIBERTY; a large die gouge through the bottom of N in IN; multiple large NW/SE die gouges through ST in TRUST; a die gouge below the Q in QUARTER; and a large die gouge in the upper opening of E in UNITED. The reverse shows a die gouge far above the left side of the last U in UNUM; multiple small die gouges below BU in PLURIBUS; and a die gouge to the right of the cowbell. This rich marker set allows confident distinction from WDDR-006 despite shared doubling location. The Wisconsin quarter design prominently features a wheel of cheese, a corn stalk, and the dairy cow, among the most recognizable reverse designs in the State Quarters Program. No cross-references to other catalogs are known.
