2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-013

Description

Wisconsin's 2004 State Quarter depicts a cow, a round of cheese, and an ear of corn above the statehood year 1848, and it is on these high-relief reverse elements that the DDR-013 reveals a medium westward spread around the upper outer nostril of the cow. Doubled die reverse varieties form when the working hub impresses the die at a slightly shifted position during manufacture, leaving secondary images that every coin struck from that die will carry. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1988 and DMR-014, this die has been documented across three progressive stages. Stage A represents early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B, at mid-die state, exhibits a die chip in the lower first 8 of the 1848 statehood date and a die crack running along the front of the bust. Stage C reaches late die state, also unconfirmed. The mid-die-state markers on the 1848 date and the bust die crack offer reliable secondary pickup points beyond the primary nostril doubling. Collectors examining Wisconsin quarters should note that the cow's facial features provide fine surfaces where even moderate hub displacement becomes apparent under magnification.
