Description

Produced from a different die than its companion DDR-008 but sharing the same doubling location, DDR-009 on the 2004-P Wisconsin State Quarter shows medium spread west on the upper outer nostril of the cow. The medium classification distinguishes this variety from the stronger DDR-008 — here the displacement is narrower, requiring more deliberate magnification to separate the secondary impression from the primary nostril contour. Cataloged as UVC-1984 with DMR-010, the sequential numbering from DDR-008 reflects their closely related documentation, though each represents an entirely separate die that independently developed nostril doubling. Stage A documents both the obverse and reverse in early die state, with later stages unconfirmed. That multiple dies within the 2004-P Wisconsin Quarter production run exhibit westward spread on the same anatomical feature suggests a systemic hubbing condition rather than an isolated incident. The Wisconsin Quarter reverse — designed by Alfred Maletsky depicting the state's agricultural identity through cow, cheese, and corn imagery — became one of the most actively searched issues in the 50 State Quarters Program.
