Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista as DDR-003 under UVC-1764 and DMR-004, this 2004-P Wisconsin State Quarter variety shows a strong spread on the upper outer nostril of the cow featured on the reverse. The die progressed across three stages. Stage A designates both reverse and obverse as EDS. Stage B is MDS, characterized by a die crack across the cow's right ear, a die crack across the front of the bust, a small die chip off the lower chin, and a medium die chip in the ribbon. Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The Wisconsin State Quarter reverse, designed by Alfred Maletsky, depicts a cow, a wheel of cheese, and an ear of corn. The cow's nostril is a narrow, defined element where hub doubling is particularly measurable. Stage B specimens with all four markers — ear crack, bust crack, chin chip, and ribbon chip — are the most comprehensively documented for attribution. All 2004 State Quarters are struck in the standard copper-nickel clad composition. The die crack progression from Stage A through B provides a useful timeline for confirming which state a given example represents.
