2004 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Spread to the NNW on this 2004 Lincoln Memorial cent shows as notches on the lower left ERTY of LIBERTY and the upper left underside of the horizontal bar of the T in LIBERTY. Extra thickness appears on the upper left IN GOD WE TRUST and on the lower left of each date digit. Cross-references: CONECA DDO-024; Wexler Variety ID: 2004 1¢ WDDO-002. Obverse die markers: a short strong die gouge runs southeast from the lower right of the W in WE; a die gouge dot sits in the field north of the crossbar of the A in STATES. The 2004 Lincoln cent was struck in Philadelphia with a copper-plated zinc planchet — the composition used from 1982 onward — and the year saw billions of cents produced across multiple facilities. WDDO-002 carries both CONECA and Wexler attributions, making it one of the better cross-referenced doubled die obverses in the 2004 cent census. The NNW spread direction is a consistent feature across die states, and the ERTY notches serve as a quick initial confirmation under ten-power magnification.
